How to: Milan Design Week for dummies

Ogni anno Milano aspetta

In April, Milan eagerly
awaits one of the most exciting periods of the year, the
International Design Fair. A week full of events, presentations and
cocktail parties which turns the entire city into a showroom under
the sky, filled with designers from all over the world.

The official
presentations of the SALONI are held at the Fiera Rho and
are intended for those who work in the design/architecture field. The
public can enter only in the last two days, during the weekend. The
SALONE SATELLITE is usually the most interesting section of the
Saloni because is dedicated to the new ideas and new objects, not yet
regulated by the rules of business. A selected number of designers
present their prototypes or their small productions trying to catch
the attention of the main companies that could take them under their
wing. The Saloni allow to have a huge overview of the global design
scene, but sometimes (especially in the last years) a very exciting
experience turns into an almost boring routine, just like reading a
magazine in a waiting room.

The public can see new
trends, young designers, installations, artworks and more unusual
items in the FUORISALONE, not a physical place, but several places
scattered throughout Milan, that make design accessible and
democratic, transforming the boring action of reading a magazine into
a special sensory experience.
The main locations for
the FuoriSalone are:

Porta Genova

design alternating the famous brands that make the history of design
with the newest technologies, ideas and prototypes made by the new
talented designers. Every street and every house in the area open
their doors to hordes of onlookers who crowd the streets in search of
interesting objects that are often even for sale.

design week.

Then we can add all the
new realities such as Porta Romana district, Corso Como, or the
Liberty project in Porta Venezia, a circuit that combines contemporary
design to architectural and decorative Art Nouveau style which is
particularly rich in this central area of the city, to make it
more known to the citizens and foreign guests who visit Milan during
the Design week.
