The documentaries are the new way to let people know the hard work that stays behind the glossy world of fashion. Through the camera eyes you can see journalists or fashion designers and discover their secret life by private confessions, works and poetry. Valentino Garavani has been the first who opened the doors of his big Mignanelli Palace in Rome: Matt Tymauer in “The last Emperor” filmed him during the last year of his career. He was preparing the exhibition at Ara Pacis and the big party at the Coliseum for the 45th anniversary of the firm. You can live the drama of making a Swarovsky crystal gown, mixing it with the joy of luxury life and financial problems dued to the Marzotto group.

Even Karl Lagerfeld wanted a documentary about his life, so Rodolphe Marconi directed “Lagerfeld Confidential”. Marconi showed such happy and creative moments, but also the loneliness and the weakness that characterize the life of Karl. In the fashion-documentary list there are also important works by Loic Prigent such as “Signè Chanel”or“Marc Jacobs & Louis Vuitton”. The first one is composed of 5 episodes that show the preparation of a Chanel haute couture collection; from the sketches by Karl Lagerfeld, to the dramas of the seamstresses and shoemakers. In the second film is described the long collaboration between the American fashion designer Marc Jacobs and the French luxury brand Louis Vuitton.

It’s impossible not to mention “The September Issue” by R.J.Cutler, who filmed the making of the American Vogue’s biggest-ever issue, September 2007. Shooting, styling, retouching; every single action made by Anna Wintour and hers staff is in this film, just to let everybody know how the most influential magazine of the world can dictate the “fashion’s rule”.

Now, is expected in autumn 2011 the first documentary on one of the most private person of the fashion system, the Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto. “This is my dream” by Theodore Stanley reveals Yamamoto’s philosophy and his way to conceive the world, during the preparation of the SS 2010 Y-3 show. It’s a sort of trip from the styling in Tokyo, to the final show in New York, passing by stressful moments to relaxing ones, when he likes to play his guitar. Unfortunately the documentary it will be visible only for a few number of buyers and, at the moment, there’s no disposition for the vision to the public.
