On June 15th and 16th, the giant of luxury LVMH has exceptionally opened laboratories, cellars, factories, historical boutique and showrooms to the public for the second edition of Les Journées Particulières. The two-days special event which show the places where LVMH dreams come true. Among the 40 opened venues in Europe, Saturday morning I had the pleasure of visiting the Bulgari accessory factory in Florence.
The factory is located in a 4000 square meters industrial building on the eastern outskirts of Florence, opened in 2005 after the decision of differentiating the Bulgari production with a luxury leather accessory line.
To accommodate the many guests there were skilled guides who passed on their great passion for the brand by explaining and illustrating the main production phases of a Bulgari bag.
The tour in the Bulgari universe begins with a VIPs photo gallery wearing Bulgari accessories on red carpets or in everyday life. Divas and contemporary celebrities take us into the heart of the exhibition where have been set up the individual craftsmen’s workspaces.
The first corner is dedicated to the creative process in the style office showing how is born and develops the project of the iconic I. Rossellini bag with its endless variety of colors. Infact, as we can see from the displays, Bulgari bags are made with bright and unusual colors, just like the stones used in the jewels.
On the work surface as well as sketches, snaps, pictures for inspiration and technical drawings, there are some bags made of a bonded leather material called “salpa“. They are the first models of the bag in which the modelers have developed the idea of the creative team moving from paper to reality. In addition, thanks to the re-staging of the moodboard used for the creation of I.Rossellini bag, I discovered that the precious lock is inspired by a mix of stylized Bulgari jewels, adapted to this new feature.

The second corner relates to the selection and cutting of fine leathers. In this phase, the skilled craftsmen select the alligator skins proposals from suppliers, but only 2% of them meet the Bulgari standards of quality: the slightest irregularity, although natural, makes the skin unusable. All the leather used including alligator, lizard and python, come from controlled farms.
Before being finished the leathers are tanned to the state of crust, making look them completely white, ready to be dyed with various techniques including hand painting as in the case of the python. Once treated, the skin is cut according to the patterns of the bags, being careful to leave as little waste material as possible.
Among the most important finishing processes of Bulgari fine leathers there is the agatatura.
The leather, after being cut and colored, it is placed in water and stretched out to dry on wooden boards. Then, to achieve the particular brilliance similar to the cabochon stones, it is passed up to 60 times under a special agate roll that polishes the leather without damaging it. In order not to miss the rounded effect of the alligator’s scales, the leather is placed on a plan with steam jets at 200°C to take on the natural three-dimensional shape that will kept forever thanks to the application of small internal supports placed under each scale.

Through the construction phase, the bag starts to come to life: the base is attached to the side walls and then all is sewn with the column machine.
The realization of the precious details such as locks and buckles decorated with gems and diamonds is definitely one of the closest phases to the jewellery vocation of the brand.
To make the Serpenti bags locks everything starts from a negative cast of the head of a snake used to make a small wax model that has to be put together with many others inside a tube filled with plaster. Once cured the plaster, the molten brass is introduced inside the mold tube, creating a tree of snake heads. The individual heads are detached and treated with a long succession of galvanic baths and finally are glazed and decorated by hand with the integration of semi-precious stones.
The same process is used for making the I.Rossellini bag’s locks, but instead of the enamelling they are decorated with semi-precious stones.

The final quality control and packaging provide the final link in the production chain of Bulgari handbags, which are now ready to be sold in boutiques around the world.
The tour of the Bulgari accessory factory in Florence ends in the sophisticated and luxurious spaces of the showroom where are displayed all the accessories collections including bags, scarves and other small leather goods.
As a memento of the visit, Bulgari has decided to give to the visitors of Les Journées Particulières a special gift made with scraps of Bulgari leather in the center for social integration and employment for people with disabilities “Il porto di Coenzo“. A great gesture and a pleasant memory in a small gift.

Che iniziativa magnifica poter vedere da vicino le fasi di realizzazione di queste opere d’arte. Mi sarebbe piaciuto tantissimo partecipare.
Al di là del design, dello stile, a questi livelli è impagabile proprio potersi rendere conto della manualità che ci vuole per dare vita a tali capolavori. Certo che poi si capiscono anche i prezzi.
Sono rimasta davvero senza parole, anche perché ovviamente il tuo post è a dir poco eccellente e dettagliatissimo. Grazie alle bellissime immagini e ai testi davvero approfonditi ho avuto un po’ la sensazione di esserci.

Non sono mai delusa quando vengo a leggere il tuo blog. Grazie alle tue descrizioni precise riesci a farci presente l’evento a cui hai partecipato e non ti ringraziero’ mai abbastanza per questo.
Pochi blogger alla fine fanno il lavoro di approfondimento che fai tu. Spesso vediamo il prodotto finito che viene descritto come “bello”, “magnifico” ecc..ma mai vediamo il processo. Vedere tutto il lavoro che c’è dietro mostra che la moda non quanto futile alcuni vorebbero farci credere.

Ecco, questa sì che è un’esperienza che mi sarebbe piaciuta da matti! Che meraviglia il “behind the scenes” ed immagino te con gli occhi a cuore per tutto il tempo. Sarò impopolare ma quelle pelli di alligatore, pitone e coccodrillo secondo me sono meravigliose anche così. Non conoscevo la tecnica del portarle al total white prima di tinteggiarle.
