As you know Australia is
in the Southern Hemisphere and due to the tilt of Earth’s rotation
relative to the Sun and the ecliptic plane, summer is from December
to March and winter is from June to September. This is not a
geography lesson, but just the reason why I’ll talk about the SPRING
SUMMER 2012/2013 fashion shows, held in Sydney from April 30 to
May 4, by the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week organization.

lettori sanno, ogni stagione scelgo una delle innumerevoli fashion
week emergenti (o poco conosciute) e colgo l’occasione per analizzare
e capire come venga concepita e percepita la moda in quel paese

Looking at the general
style of the Australian collections I have noticed,
with great pleasure, that despite the long time passed between the
“Western” fashion shows (Sept.-Oct.) and the Sydney Fashion
Week (May), there aren’t blatant copies of the big Italian and
French brands, as we are often accustomed to seeing in the emerging North European and American fashion weeks. Obviously we can see a lot
“European trends”, but they are well mixed with
the Australian-Aboriginal culture and the Asian influences.

voglio trattare oggi è uno dei preferiti dai paesi anglofoni: le
STAMPE. Generalmente in Australia si ritrovano tre tipi di
stampati: immagini caleidoscopiche con giochi di tagli e
riflessi; cornici barocche ed infine collage di patterns
differenti. Il tutto spesso a tema floreale.

After graduating from the East Sydney Technical College in 1981, Lisa Ho launched her eponymous label after working for only one year in the industry. She soon moved onto the international stage thanks to celebrity fans wearing her gowns on numerous red carpets. Her grandmother, a tailor of African descent, taught her to sew from the age of 4 and she collect vintage clothes and fabrics since she was 15. The SS2012 collection is characterized by the refined floral prints on short dresses and pijama jumpsuits.
Dopo essersi diplomata presso l’East Technical College di Sydney nel 1981, Lisa Ho lancia il suo marchio omonimo nell’anno successivo. Presto conquista la scena internazionale grazie alle celebrità che indossano i suoi abiti sui red carpet. E’ molto nota per la sua raccolta di abiti e tessuti d’epoca e per il suo stile raffinato trasmessole dalla nonna, sarta di origine africana, che le ha insegnato a cucire all’età 4 anni. La collezione si caratterizza per le raffinate stampe a tema floreale su abiti corti e tute pigiama.
The London-born Alice McCall traded in a ten-year career as a stylist and launched her eponymous fashion label in 2004. In the late 1990s, McCall began creating and selling one-off silk tops and dresses through a select few London stores. Kate Moss snapped some up and heads turned.
McCall’s first-ever collection was for high-end streetwear label Buddhist Punk, then she returned to Australia in 2003 to design for Sass & Bide. A year later she launched the Alice McCall label at Australian Fashion Week. The SS2012 collection presents short silk dresses focused on transparency effect and big floral prints.
La londinese Alice McCall lancia il suo marchio omonimo nel 2004 dopo aver lavorato per più di dieci anni come stylist. Alla fine degli anni’90, parallelamente all’attività di stylist, iniziò a vendere le sue creazioni in seta ad un pubblico molto selezionato e non appena Kate Moss ne indossò qualcuna, fioccarono richieste di collaborazioni. La prima collezione in assoluto fu per un high-end streetwear brand, Buddhist Punk, poi si trasferì in Australia nel 2003 per disegnare Sass & Bide finché un anno dopo decide di presentarsi alla settimana della moda australiana.
La collezione presenta abiti corti in seta con giochi di trasparenze e grandi stampati con il tema della cornice floreale.
Akira Isogawa is one of Australia’s most celebrated and successful fashion designers. Born in Kyoto in 1964, he moved to Australia at the age of 21 to study fashion at the Sydney Institute of Technology. He has been a regular fixture at Australian Fashion Week since 1996 and began showing his collections to international buyers in Paris two years later. Isogawa’s aesthetic draws heavily on traditional Japanese designs and techniques, with a great interest on fabrics, embroidery, printing and hand painting. The SS2012 collection is characterized by the strong contrasts of color flared dresses (below the knees) with floral prints inspired by ancient Japan. Wide and comfortable silhouettes are embellished with flashy accessories like hats and sculpture necklaces.
Akira Isogawa è uno degli stilisti australiani più famosi e di successo. Nato a Kyoto nel 1964, si trasferisce in Australia all’età di 21 anni per studiare moda al Sydney Institute of Technology. Sin dal 1996 è uno degli appuntamenti fissi della fashion week australiana e dal 1998 ha iniziato a mostrare le sue collezioni ai buyer internazionali anche a Parigi. L’estetica di Isogawa trae ispirazione dai disegni e dalle tecniche di lavorazione della tradizione giapponese, con un grande interesse per i tessuti, il ricamo, la stampa e la pittura a mano. La collezione si caratterizza per i forti contrasti cromatici degli abiti svasati (lunghi fin sotto le ginocchia) con stampe floreali ispirate all’antico giappone. Silhouette larghe e comode arricchite con accessori vistosi come copricapi e collane scultura.
Camilla Franks, originally a theater costume designer, debuted in 2004 with her first colorful collection. Her kaftans have decreed an overseas success conquering Hollywood celebrities. The inspirations for the SS2012 collection come from the tribal world with feather prints and Aboriginal maxi jewels, but also with references to the Middle Eastern world with stylized floral patterns resembling ancient Arab tiles.
Camilla Franks, nata come costumista teatrale, nel 2004 debutta con la sua prima collezione di caftani coloratissimi che decretano il successo della stilista anche oltreoceano conquistando da subito le star hollywoodiane. Per questa collezione ispirazioni tribali negli stampati animalier con effetto piumato i maxi gioielli indigeni, ma anche riferimenti al mondo medio orientale con cotivi floreali stilizzati che sembrano richiamare alla mente le maioliche arabe.

For over 40 years, her creativity has been shaped by an eclectic mix of global influences, from Aboriginal Australian to early European, and the exotic arts of Africa, India, Asia and South America. Her SS2012 collection is a “melting pot” with exotic prints on typical African costumes and English XIX century silhouettes.

His collection is made of short (mid thighs) dresses and suits with tight waist silhouette and floral prints.

Romance Was Born – Known for their quirky pieces and theatrical catwalk shows, duo Luke Sales and Anna Plunkett met during their time studying fashion at East Sydney Technical College.They always follow their love for kitsch and creativity, and finally gained the attention of the fashion media at Australian Fashion Week in 2008. The pair are known for their unique catwalk shows, held in cultural places such as the Sydney Conservatorium, the NSW State Library, the University of Sydney and the Sydney Theatre Company. Their SS2012 collection is characterized by patterns collages and prints taken from cartoons and pop art, matched with funny accessories as the metallic
cuffs, recalling the kitsch taste of the brand.

La coppia è noti per le loro sfilate spesso tenute in luoghi culturali come il Conservatorio di Sydney, la Biblioteca di Stato, l’Università di Sydney e la Sydney Theatre Company. La loro collezione si caratterizza per i collage di stampe ed effetti grafici che richiamano il mondo dei fumetti e della pop art con accessori eccessivi come le polsiere metalliche, in linea con il gusto kitsch del brand.

Sara Phillips, dopo un lungo periodo di lavoro nel settore ha deciso di studiare fashion design allo East Sydney Design Studio, lanciando successivamente il suo marchio omonimo nel 2007. Rifiutando da sempre le tendenze più comuni, Sara bilancia sapientemente la sartoria classica con una visione creativa individuale e una grande attenzione ai dettagli. La collezione si caratterizza di abitini corti trapezoidali, stampati con il tema delle cornici floreali nelle tonalità del blu su fondo bianco.
Sono meravigliose queste collezioni! Un trionfo di colori e di disegni di cui hai giustamente trovato le fonti di ispirazione! Molta fantasia anche nei tagli, ma per la linea primavera estate va benissimo!

Sono dei bellissimi pezzi. E mi sembra davvero una fashion week interessante. Tutto è molto colorato, ce lo vedo questo stile in australia. Forse qualcosa è ripreso dalle fashion week americane, ma mi pare normale..

Secondo me la ‘rivelazione’ di questa fashion week australiana è stata Lisa Ho. Ho adorato i suoi abiti, così eterei eppure attualissimi. Che meraviglia!
